Course Description
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a proved effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease and dystonia. So far, about 260,000 patients worldwide have been treated with DBS for disabling movement disorder. It is part of the movement disorders neurologist education and knowledge to know at least the basis of this therapy. Indeed, also general neurologists will be increasingly confronted with the management of these surgical patients, who suffer from chronic neurological conditions, thus requiring lifelong care. This advanced course is intended for neurologists, neurosurgeons, and nurse practitioners who are already involved in the care of DBS patients. The course will focus on advanced programming options with directional leads, LFP guided and closed loop DB, Troubleshooting and failed DBS, role of genetics, tips for Parkinson's disease, dystonia, Essential tremor, Tourret syndome, and other neurological conditions. Young researchers will have the opportunity to show their presentations and video cases in their forum with e-posters and short flash presentations, and the video section will allow interactive involvement of participants concerning challenging DBS patients. Attendees will test their acquired knowledge in diagnosis and managing complex DBS cases.
Learning objectives
After participating in this activity, the learner will be able to:
• Provide an in-depth overview of DBS indications
• Provide tips in programming in dystonia and tremor and programming with directional leads
• Discuss troubleshooting options in Movement Disorders
• Describe the strategies for management of failed DBS
• Provide tips for neurosurgeons for successful implantation and great effect
• Become efficient in managing difficult DBS cases.
Target audiance
This course is designed for movement disorder neurologists, functional neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners, and trainees who are already (or will be) involved in the selection, intra- or postoperative management of patients with movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia, etc.) treated by deep brain stimulation surgery and want to strengthen their knowledge in this field.
